What Should My Blood Glucose Level Be?

Currently available estimates of blood-sugar level prevalence in India are based on published data derived from very few studies. A fasting plasma glucose < 140 mg/dl) is considered normal and fasting ≥126 mg/dl and post glucose 2 hours value of ≥ 200 mg/dl is diagnostic of diabetes. There has been a ‘gap’ between the normal and a diabetic blood sugar value, so that normal persons are not given the level of diabetes, a degenerative metabolic disease with an extensive amount of limitations and checking.

About one in every two Indians (47%) living with diabetes is unaware of their condition and just about a quarter (24%) figures out how to manage it, a May 2019 investigation has found. Rural men with low household wealth and low education levels had a higher incidence compared to other groups.

"In progressing countries like India we need to shift focus from maternal and child health to the rising burden of non-communicable diseases,” said Ashish Awasthi, assistant professor at PHFI and a co-author of the study, which was published in the medical journal BMC Medicine. “Like developed countries, we also need to have regular health check-ups to monitor our blood glucose levels. Here, we undergo a check-up only when we are joining a new organization and they ask for a health certificate."

This the study is the first from India to report on the awareness and knowledge of diabetes on a representative sample of different regions of the country, representing a population of over 1.3 billion people. The study emphasizes the need for improvement in knowledge and awareness both among the general the population as well as diabetic subjects in order to achieve prevention and better control of diabetes and its complications. The present study provides a snapshot of the current situation of knowledge and awareness of diabetes in India.

How do I measure my blood sugar levels?

If you have type 1 or type 2 diabetes, there are two ways to measure blood sugar:
  • Blood sugar checks that you do yourself. These numbers tell you what your blood sugar level is at the time you test. Blood sugar monitoring is very important for people with diabetes.
  • The A1C test is done in a lab or at your doctor’s office. The A1C test is a measure of the average blood sugar level over the past 3 months. It also helps your health care team decide the type and amount of diabetes medication you may need.

What can you do to manage your blood glucose levels?

  • Don't eat foods high in carbohydrates and sugar such as buttered potatoes, fatty foods, candy, and sugary desserts like cake with frosting. 
  • Diet modification is a major step in your management of diabetes. Use a blood sugar logbook with the date, time, and values of your or you and your doctor to help you manage your type 1 diabetes or type 2 diabetes.
  • Use a blood glucose home test kit to get glucose test results.
  • Additionally, log any change in symptoms over time. The logbook will enable you and your doctor to modify treatments (for example, amount of insulin to take) and actions to obtain the best management of your diabetes.

Being More Active Is Better for You

If you have trouble maintaining blood-sugar levels, being active makes your body more sensitive to insulin (the hormone that allows cells in your body to use blood sugar for energy), which helps manage your diabetes. Physical activity also helps control blood sugar levels and lowers your risk of heart disease and nerve damage. Increases in daily activity can come from small changes made throughout your day, such as walking or cycling instead of using the car, getting off a tram, train or bus a stop earlier and walking the rest of the way, or walking the children to school.
