Excess sugar in the body passes from the blood into the urine and then triggers a filtering process that draws tremendous amounts of fluid from your body. If this issue is left untreated, this can lead to threatening dehydration and a diabetic coma. 


A brain requires glucose to function. In extreme cases, low blood sugar can make a person pass out. Hypoglycemia can be caused by too much insulin or not enough food. Exercising too forcibly or drinking too much alcohol can have the same effect.

Risk factors due to blood sugar

The following factors can increase the risk in a person:

Insulin delivery problems:

If a person is on an insulin pump, you have to check your blood sugar frequently. Insulin supplies stop if the pump fails or the tubing (catheter) is twisted or falls out of place. A lack of insulin can lead to diabetic ketoacidosis.

An illness, trauma or surgery:

When a person gets sick or injured, blood sugar levels tend to rise, sometimes drastically. This causes diabetic ketoacidosis if you have type 1 diabetes.

Poorly managed diabetes:

If you don't monitor your blood sugar properly, at certain intervals, or take your medications as directed, a person can have a higher risk of developing long-term complications and a diabetic coma.

No taking meals or insulin on time:

People with diabetes and eating disorder choose not to use their insulin as directed with the hope of losing weight. This is a dangerous, threatening practice that increases the risk of a diabetic coma.

Drinking alcohol:

Alcohol has unpredictable effects on your blood sugar. Alcohol's soothing effects make it harder for you to know when a person has low blood sugar symptoms. This increases the risk of diabetic coma caused by hypoglycemia.

Illegal drug use:

Illegal drugs, such as cocaine and ecstasy, increases the risk of severe high blood sugar levels and conditions linked to diabetic coma.

Prevention of blood sugar

Follow your healthy diet plan:

Consumption of wholesome, unprocessed food, fruits and vegetables. Foods that contain a lot of carbohydrates eg cookies digest quickly but spike the insulin levels in the pancreas.

Frequent check on blood sugar level:

Frequent blood sugar tests can tell if a person is keeping the blood sugar level in your target range. Check more frequently if you've exercised after a while because exercise can cause to blood sugar levels to drop, even hours later, especially if you don't exercise regularly.

Take your medication as directed:

Check with the doctor on the dose or the timing of your medication.

Check for ketones when your blood sugar is high:

Check the urine for ketones when the blood sugar level is over 250 mg/dL (14 mmol/L) on more than two consecutive tests, especially if you are sick. Check with the doctor immediately if you have any level of ketones and are vomiting. High levels of ketones lead to diabetic ketoacidosis, which can lead to a coma. 

Healthy weight: Having an ideal weight and being healthy and fit.

Physical Exercise: At least 30 minutes of brisk walk reduces the sugar levels.

Get insulin checked in accurate intervals: Checking the insulin levels and taking precautions accordingly.

Limited intake of salt and sugar
Replace pasta or Maida items with wheat
Eat foods that are high in fiber which helps in control blood sugar levels

Complications when we untreat extreme cases of blood sugar

If a person untreats, a diabetic coma can lead to:
  • Permanent brain damage
  • Death

What are the different levels of Blood Sugar?

High blood sugar level (Hyperglycemia):

The low blood sugar is a condition that occurs when the blood glucose level drops down below normal that is when the level is below 70mg/dL before the meal.

Fasting blood sugar level:

Testing of Blood Sugar

There are two methods that a person or any healthcare sectors would use to assess fasting blood sugar levels:

Fasting (morning testing before food and water): 80-130 mg/dL and two hours after food under 180 mg/dL.

Your body cannot make enough insulin or stops using insulin. The glucose stays in the blood and makes the blood sugar levels go up.
  • Overweight and obesity; i.e., a body mass index (BMI) of 25
  • Having gestational diabetes or insulin resistance in the past
  • Experiencing an unexplained stillbirth or a birth defect in a previous pregnancy

  • Have had gestational diabetes before
  • Having a previous birth of a large baby (9 pounds or more)

How blood sugarcane Monitoring In PREGNANCY:
For every type of diabetes, if you are pregnant you need to see your doctor at least once a month, perhaps as often as once a week.

You may need to test your blood several times a day. Generally, these times are fasting (first thing in the morning before you eat) and 2 hours after each meal. Occasionally, you may be asked to test more frequently during the day or at night. As each person is an individual, your health care provider can advise the schedule best for you.

Babies of diabetic mothers may have major birth defects in the heart and blood vessels, brain and spine, urinary system and kidneys, and digestive system.
  • Macrosomia: This is the term for a baby that is much larger than normal. All of the nutrients the baby gets comes directly from the mother's blood. If the mother's blood has too much sugar, the pancreas of the baby makes more insulin to use this glucose. This causes fat to form and the baby grows very large.   
  • Hypoglycemia: The baby may have low levels of blood glucose right after delivery. This problem occurs if the mother's blood glucose levels have been high for a long time. This leads to a lot of insulin in the baby’s blood. After delivery, the baby continues to have a high insulin level, but no longer has the glucose from the mother. This causes the newborn's blood glucose level to get very low. The baby's blood glucose level can check after birth. If the level is too low, the baby may need glucose in an IV.
  • Trouble respiratory:  Too much insulin or too much glucose in a baby's system may keep the lungs from growing fully. This can cause breathing problems in babies. This is more likely in babies born before 37 weeks of pregnancy.
  • Preeclampsia: Women with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes are at increased risk for preeclampsia during pregnancy. To lower the risk, they should take low-dose aspirin (60 to 150 mg a day) from the end of the first trimester until the baby is born.
The mother might have:
  • A higher chance of needing a C-section
  •  Miscarriage
  •  High blood pressure or preeclampsia
  • Pre-term birth

What is it?

Categories of Hypoglycemia

Typically, hypoglycemia is subdivided into three categories: symptomatic, asymptomatic, and severe hypoglycemia.

  • Symptomatic - Common signs of symptomatic hypoglycemia include a racing heart, shakiness, hunger, sweating, and nausea. These are signs that your body is trying to correct for low blood sugar and is called the counterregulatory response. With the counterregulatory response, your body reduces the insulin it makes, increases the production of a hormone called glucagon (the anti-insulin hormone) and increases adrenaline.

  • Asymptomatic- Person with blood sugars frequently less than 70 mg/d may develop asymptomatic hypoglycemia. This happens when the body’s response to hypoglycemia can be dulled due to the loss of the counterregulatory response. People experiencing asymptomatic hypoglycemia may not have symptoms until their blood sugar drops very low, affecting brain function. 

  • Severe-Severe hypoglycemia refers to a type of hypoglycemia that makes you unable to treat yourself due to confusion, sleepiness, or even coma, requiring the assistance of others. At extremely low blood sugar levels, seizure and even death can occur.

Am I at risk?

  • Anyone diagnosed with diabetes that is taking medication for blood sugar control, whether it’s a pill or injections, is at risk for hypoglycemia.
  • Age also can be a factor when it comes to hypoglycemia. Those over age 65 may be at increased risk for hypoglycemia because of the body’s slower clearance of diabetic medications and an impaired counterregulatory response.

  • 8 ounces (1 cup) of milk
  • 3 or 4 glucose tablets
  • 5 to 6 candies that you can chew quickly (such as mints)

Wait 15 minutes and then check your blood sugar again. If it is still low, eat or drink something high in sugar again. Once your blood sugar returns to normal, eat a meal or snack. This can help keep low blood sugar from coming back.
